Belva J. Bauer

Belva J. Bauer, 89, of Hawkeye, died Saturday, December 22, 2012, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, following a lengthy battle with melanoma.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 27, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Hawkeye with Rev. Jason Princer officiating. Interment will be at the Hawkeye Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the church on Thursday.

Belva June, daughter of Nicholas and Tillie Beckler Earnest, was born June 9, 1923, in Seward County, Nebraska. As a teenager she moved with her family to Pekin, Illinois where she graduated from high school. She spent one year in California working for Lockheed and returned to Pekin. On February 28, 1946, she was united in marriage with Newton A. Bauer. A resident of Iowa since 1960, Belva was employed as a soil conservation clerk with the Department of Agriculture in West Union. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hawkeye, the United Methodist Women, the Legion Auxiliary and served on the Hawkeye Library Board. She enjoyed playing bingo, sewing, gardening, reading, and playing games.

In addition to her husband of Hawkeye, Belva is survived by four children, Roger (Peggy) Bauer of Cumming, Georgia, Richard (Jane) Bauer of Kensett, Iowa, Gerald (Susan) Bauer of Oelwein, and Kathleen (Doug) Bauer-Davis of Hawkeye; six grandchildren, Gennie Anderson, Julie (Robert) Neelbauer, Christopher Bauer, Sarah (Brian) Riedel, Elizabeth Sunnes, and Marshall Sunnes; and one brother, Walter (Lillian) Earnest of Pekin, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Edgar, Raymond, and Richard; and one sister, Elsie.

Kathy-so sorry for your loss. My dad just died in October so I understand grief. I cannot tell you how to feel. I can tell you-treasure the good memories because they help you get through the tough times

Dearest Kathy and ALL : Am so very sad to see that your Mom passed away.
What wonderful memories I have of time spent at "Bauers"- Not only great friendship, but am sure I have stronger bones, etc. due to the great milk from your farm. Not only was it great for drinking, but the 3-4" of cream on top of it helped make many a batch of homemade ice cream. I recall wonderful popcorn your Mom served... and STRAWBERRIES- Remember the trips to Suicide Hill to go sledding? and Gouldsburg Park to swim, etc....? I do have pictures of us when we are about 4-5 with our Dads at Suicide Hill!!
I know how much my Dad and Mom loved your folks, too...seemed Dad loved to bundle us up in the middle of winter- with a big, old quilt in the back seat of the convertible.... and it'd be the greatest snowstorm ever.... and we were off to Bauer's!! The car would barrel through those drifts, bouncing along on those gravel roads like it knew its way there blindfolded!!
Please give my love and memories to your brothers and a special hug to your wonderful Dad. Times with you all will always be special memories in my heart. She was a special, special lady.

It is not yet a year that Dad passed, and I still miss him every day. But we can imagine the reunion he is having

We were so sorry to hear of Belva's passing. My fondest memory of Belva is the unflinching restraint she showed every time the neighbor boy was running around her house.....again! She was always gracious and patient. May your memories help you through your grieving. Our sympathies to all of you.
